So I finally found these Wheelchair Brake Handle Extensions online after struggling with my mom’s wheelchair for months. These things are honestly a game-changer! They extend the existing brakes by 6.7 inches, which doesn’t sound like much, but trust me, it makes ALL the difference in the world.
I was pretty skeptical at first (aren’t we all with these kinds of products?), but they’re actually really well-made. They’re chromed steel with rubber handles, so they feel sturdy and kind of premium, not cheap or flimsy at all. They’re compatible with most standard manual wheelchairs too, which was a relief because I wasn’t sure if they’d work with my mom’s older model.

Installing them was way easier than I expected! I was worried I’d need to break out the toolbox, but nope – you just remove the existing rubber knobs on the wheelchair brakes and slide these extensions into place. Took me like 5 minutes, tops. The best part is that my mom can now independently lock her brakes without me hovering around. To be fair, they do add a bit of width to the chair depending on how your wheelchair brakes are oriented, but it hasn’t been an issue for us getting through doorways or anything.
These extensions have been pretty good for safety too. My mom can lock her wheelchair securely without straining, which means she’s less likely to get hurt trying to exit an unlocked chair (happened twice before – not fun). The braking feels more controlled now, which gives me peace of mind when she’s on her own.

Oh, and they come as a pair, in case that wasn’t obvious. If you’re on the fence about these like I was, I’d say just go for it. They’re definitely more useful than those cupholders I bought last year that kept tipping over! If you have questions, the seller seems pretty responsive too.
