I finally bit the bullet and upgraded our RV’s old, saggy couch with this Thomas Payne 62″ Grummond Jackknife Sofa, and honestly? It’s been a total game-changer for our weekend trips!
So I’ve been eyeing this sofa for a while after our friends got one for their Airstream. We went with the Grummond PolyHyde vinyl finish (they’ve got four options though – Millbrae, Altoona, and this fabric one called Norlina that’s supposed to be super pet-friendly). The PolyHyde comes with this 5-year warranty against breaking down from moisture and stuff, which was pretty important since our last couch literally started flaking apart after two seasons.
The best part about this thing is how it works as both a couch and a bed. We had people over last weekend and I just pulled it out in like 10 seconds – way easier than those nightmare hide-a-beds that weigh a ton and take forever to set up! It’s got this fold-down center console with cupholders which is pretty convenient for movie nights. My husband is always spilling his drinks when we hit bumpy roads, so this has been kind of a lifesaver.
As far as comfort goes, it’s definitely a step up from what we had before. The foam is pretty dense and supportive – not quite as plush as our couch at home, but it’s an RV sofa, so I wasn’t expecting miracles. The spring system inside makes a big difference compared to our old flat cushion setup. It fits three people without feeling cramped (it’s about 59″ wide for sitting), and when it’s folded out for sleeping, you get a decent 62″ x 42″ space. My sister stayed over and said it was way better than she expected for an RV bed.
Installation wasn’t too bad at all. The thing only weighs like 87 pounds, which is way lighter than I thought it would be. We managed to get it through our narrow RV door with just a bit of angling (it’s 62″ x 30″ x 34″ overall). The steel frame feels solid without making it impossible to move around. It came with this matching kickboard that finishes off the look nicely. There’s also some optional leg kit you can buy separately if you need to adjust the height, but we didn’t bother with that.
One thing I was really worried about was keeping it clean because, well, we’re not exactly the neatest travelers. The PolyHyde vinyl has been super easy to wipe down so far – my kid dropped ice cream on it during our last trip and it just wiped right off. You can get their special vinyl cleaner, but honestly, a damp cloth has worked fine for us.
The specs say it’s got a modern rectangular style, which fits our recently updated RV interior pretty well. The sofa sits about 19 inches high, which is comfortable for most adults. We’ve had it for about 3 months now, and it’s holding up great with regular weekend use.
For anyone considering an RV sofa upgrade, this one’s been worth every penny for us. It makes the space feel more like home but still handles the practical realities of camping and traveling. The fact that Lippert Components (the company behind Thomas Payne) has such a good reputation in the RV world definitely gave me more confidence in buying it. So far, I’m pretty impressed with how it’s handled our not-so-gentle family adventures!
