So I’ve been on the hunt for a decent office chair that won’t kill my back after those endless Zoom meetings, and honestly, I think I’ve found a winner with this Steelcase Amia.
Let me tell you, this chair is actually built for people who sit all day like me. It’s got this black steel frame that feels pretty solid—not like those flimsy chairs that make you wonder if you’ll end up on the floor mid-meeting. The fabric is some kind of polyester (Connect fabric, they call it), which is comfortable enough and seems like it’ll hold up well. It’s a bit on the heavier side at 55 pounds, but that just means it’s not going to slide around when I’m trying to reach for something.
The best part? All the adjustments! I kind of hate when chairs only have that one height lever and that’s it. This one lets you change the seat depth from about 16.5 to 19 inches, which is perfect because my legs are on the shorter side. The arms adjust pretty much every way possible—up, down, in, out, and they even pivot. Such a game-changer when you’re typing all day.
The lumbar support is probably my favorite feature though. I’ve tried those chairs with the weird plastic pieces that dig into your back, but this one actually conforms to your spine in a way that feels natural. And to be fair, I was skeptical about how comfortable it would be for marathon work sessions, but the foam padding is dense enough that I’m not feeling those pressure points I got with my old chair.
Height adjustment goes from 16 to 21 inches, which is pretty standard I guess, but works well for my desk. You can also lock the back upright if you’re like me and tend to slouch after a few hours!
What surprised me is how this chair doesn’t look like some weird spaceship contraption even with all the ergonomic features. It’s about 27.5 inches wide and 25 inches deep, so it fits nicely in my not-so-huge home office. It holds up to 300 pounds too, which is reassuring.
It’s definitely built to last—apparently tested to some ANSI/BIFMA standards (whatever those are), and comes with a 12-year warranty, which is honestly longer than I’ve kept any piece of furniture before!
If you’re spending hours at your desk like I am, this chair is seriously worth considering. My back feels way better at the end of the day than it did with my old chair from that office supply store. Not cheap, but when I think about how many hours of my life I spend sitting, it makes sense to invest in something decent.
