So I just got this silicone mat thing for my kid’s IKEA Antilop high chair, and honestly, it’s been kind of a game-changer. I was getting pretty tired of cleaning food out of every crack and crevice of that chair after each meal (my 18-month-old is basically a food-throwing champion at this point).
This bright green silicone mat fits perfectly over the tray—like, it was clearly made specifically for the Antilop, not one of those “universal” mats that never quite fit right. It’s got these raised edges that are about 1.7 inches high, which actually do a decent job keeping most of the mess contained. Not perfect, mind you, but way better than before!
The material feels pretty good—it’s that food-grade silicone that’s apparently BPA-free and non-toxic. To be fair, it does have that typical silicone feel, but it doesn’t have any weird smell which was a relief. My little one doesn’t seem to mind eating directly off it, and I feel pretty comfortable with it since it’s hypoallergenic and doesn’t seem to grow bacteria like some of the plastic mats I’ve tried.
The best part? Cleanup is so much easier now! I don’t have to unclip and remove the whole tray anymore—just wipe it down or rinse it off if things got really messy. I’ve thrown it in the dishwasher a few times too when it needed a deep clean (after spaghetti night… don’t ask). It’s held up pretty well so far, no staining even though we eat a lot of tomato-based foods.
It’s surprisingly portable too. It weighs like nothing—maybe two-thirds of a pound?—and you can just fold it up to take with you. I’ve started bringing it to my mom’s house when we visit because her high chair is ancient and kind of gross, lol.
The size is exactly 41cm x 41cm with those 4.2cm raised edges. Sounds weirdly specific, but that’s because it fits the Antilop like a glove. Just drops right on top of the tray and stays put without any annoying clips or suction cups that never work anyway.
Seriously, mealtime cleanup is so much less stressful now. Before I got this, I was spending way too much time scrubbing dried banana and cheerios off everything. Now most of the mess stays on the mat, not all over the chair or (even worse) ground into my kitchen floor. The silicone is actually softer than the plastic tray too, which seems more comfortable for my kid when he’s face-planting into his yogurt.
I’ve taken it with us to restaurants a couple times too—it folds up pretty small and fits in my diaper bag without taking up too much space. It’s definitely been worth it for us.
Just a heads up though—when I first got it, I soaked it in hot water for about 20 minutes and washed it really well before using it. The instructions recommended that. Also, don’t use anything sharp to clean it. I accidentally scratched my last silicone thing with a metal scrubber and it was never the same.
You just get the one mat in the package, but that’s all we needed. The green color is actually prettier in person than I expected—it’s like a nice bright apple green that looks clean and cheerful.
