I’ve had my eye on a good rocking chair for our deck for ages, and honestly, I’m so glad I finally pulled the trigger on this Rockaway chair! Let me tell you, this thing is pretty impressive for what it is.
When it arrived, I was kind of skeptical about a plastic rocking chair, but this isn’t your flimsy patio furniture. This Rockaway rocker from Semco Plastics is actually super sturdy – like, surprisingly so. The whole thing is made from this high-density polyethylene resin that feels way more substantial than I expected. They claim it holds up to 600 pounds, which seems crazy, but after sitting in it, I totally believe it. It’s got this dovetail design that makes it really stable.
The weather-proofing is what really sold me, to be fair. Living in an area where we get everything from blazing summers to snowy winters, I needed something that wouldn’t fall apart after one season. My last wooden rocker started splintering after just one rainy spring! This one’s different though – the material doesn’t rust or splinter, and they say the white color won’t fade, which is a huge plus. I’ve left it out in a couple downpours already and it still looks brand new. Just wiped it down with some soapy water and good as new!
Putting it together was actually not bad at all. It breaks down into four pieces, and I didn’t even need any tools. Took me maybe 10 minutes tops? It’s also pretty light (about 26 pounds), which makes it easy to move around. I’ve been dragging it around the yard to follow the shade, and my back isn’t complaining. I’m thinking about taking it camping next month too, since it wouldn’t be a huge hassle to throw in the truck.
Comfort-wise, it’s definitely roomier than it looks. The seat is about 19 inches square, which is plenty for me (and I’m not a small guy!). The backrest has this nice curve that feels better than my old wooden rocker that was straight as a board. The armrests are wide enough that I can actually rest my arms on them – sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many chairs get this wrong. And the rocking motion is smooth – not too fast, not too slow. I’ve fallen asleep in it twice now while reading!
Size-wise, it’s about 30 inches long, 21 inches wide, and 42 inches high, which fits perfectly in the corner of our deck without taking up too much space. The white color goes with pretty much everything, which is good because my wife is picky about our outdoor décor matching.
I think what I appreciate most is how low-maintenance it is. My old wooden rocker needed constant TLC – sanding, staining, sealing. This one? Just hose it off when it gets dirty. Done. That’s it. For someone like me who’d rather spend time actually enjoying my deck rather than maintaining the furniture, it’s perfect.
It’s definitely pricier than some of the cheaper plastic options out there, but it’s way comfier than the $30 stackable chairs we had before, and it seems like it’ll last for years. If you’re looking for something that’ll survive whatever mother nature throws at it while still being comfortable enough for those long summer evenings, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a look.
