I just got my Penguin Rocking Sofa Chair delivered last week, and honestly, I’m pretty impressed with it! The dark gray one looks so much better in person than in the pictures – it’s got this sleek, modern vibe that works surprisingly well in both my living room and out on my covered patio.
The fabric is this ice velvet material that’s actually way softer than I expected. It’s kind of like that super-soft microfiber feel, but a bit more luxurious? My cat has already tried to claw at it a couple times (typical), but amazingly, it hasn’t left any marks! That’s a huge win in my book.
The whole penguin-shaped design thing sounded kind of gimmicky when I first ordered it, but to be fair, it’s pretty subtle and actually super cute. My mom came over yesterday and immediately asked where I got it – always a good sign, right?
The rocking motion is really gentle and smooth – not like those aggressive old-school rocking chairs that feel like they’re trying to launch you forward. I’ve been working from home lately and find myself migrating to this chair in the afternoons with my laptop. It’s comfier than my office chair, that’s for sure!
Setting it up wasn’t too bad – took me maybe 30 minutes while watching Netflix. The frame feels sturdy as heck – it’s got this thick wrought iron base that doesn’t wobble at all, even when my 6’2″ brother-in-law tried it out. The manufacturer claims it holds up to 300 pounds, and I totally believe it.
One thing I really love is that you can take the cover off to wash it. I didn’t expect that! There’s this hidden zipper that makes it super easy. I haven’t had to clean it yet, but with the amount of coffee I spill, it’s definitely going to come in handy.
Size-wise, it’s about 35″ long, 25″ wide, and 40″ high – fits perfectly in that awkward corner of my living room that’s been empty forever. The seat is about 18 inches off the ground, which works well for my height (I’m 5’7″).
I’ve tried it both inside and out on my patio during a light drizzle, and so far, it seems to handle the elements pretty well. The dark gray color helps hide any potential dirt or stains, which is a bonus for someone as clumsy as me.
If you’re looking for something different than your standard armchair but don’t want anything too out-there, this is honestly a pretty good middle ground. It’s got character without being weird, if that makes sense?
