So I finally bit the bullet and got this patient lift chair for my dad after his hip surgery, and honestly, I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner!
The thing is built like a tank – it’s made from this really sturdy steel pipe that doesn’t budge even when my dad (who’s around 260 pounds) sits on it. That powder coating is pretty nice too, since the bathroom gets so humid and you don’t want something that’s going to rust after a few months.
What I really love about this chair is how versatile it is. The height adjustment is super handy – you can crank it from about 18.5 inches up to 22.5 inches, which is perfect because my dad’s bed is kind of high. The armrests are padded with this dense foam that’s actually way more comfortable than I expected. They really help him feel secure when he’s transferring from the bed.
The chair comes with two different cushions, which is kind of genius if you ask me. There’s a regular one that’s pretty comfortable for just sitting or moving around. Then there’s the toilet cushion with a hole (about 10×6 inches) for bathroom use. Both are covered in this Oxford cloth material that’s waterproof – trust me, that’s a feature you’ll appreciate! I was worried about cleaning it, but the covers come off and you can throw them in the washing machine. So much better than the plastic chair we had before.
The wheels are decent – they’re about 4 inches and swivel all the way around, which makes it super easy to maneuver in our small bathroom. Each wheel has its own brake, which is a lifesaver when you’re trying to keep the chair steady during transfers. One heads-up though – they don’t roll great on our thick hallway carpet. We kind of have to push a bit harder there.
To be fair, I was a little intimidated by the assembly at first, but it wasn’t bad at all. Everything came with the tools needed and clear instructions. Took me maybe 20 minutes tops.
The whole setup is pretty compact compared to some medical equipment I’ve seen. It weighs about 35 pounds, which isn’t exactly light, but I can still move it around without throwing my back out. Just be aware that it’s about 23 inches wide, so measure your doorways first! Our bathroom door is pretty standard and it fits through with maybe an inch to spare.
One thing I wasn’t expecting was how much this would help ME as a caregiver. Before, helping my dad to the bathroom was this whole ordeal that left both of us stressed out. This chair has made things so much more dignified for him and way less physically demanding for me.
Customer service has been good too. One of the cushion buckles arrived broken, and they sent a replacement part no questions asked.
All in all, if you’re taking care of someone with mobility issues, this chair is kind of a game-changer. It’s not exactly cheap, but considering the quality and how much easier it’s made our daily routine, I’d say it’s totally worth it.
