I honestly didn’t expect to get so excited about a camping chair, but man, this GCI Freestyle Rocker XL is kind of a game-changer. I picked one up before our family camping trip last month, and it’s pretty much ruined regular chairs for me!
So this thing is basically an outdoor rocking chair that you can take anywhere. I’ve tried it on grass, our gravel driveway, and even at my kid’s soccer game on that weird artificial turf – rocks perfectly on all of them. That’s apparently thanks to some spring-action technology they built into it, which is actually pretty clever.
The chair is definitely on the bigger side – I’m not a small guy, and I’ve got plenty of room. My brother-in-law who’s pushing 300 pounds tried it and felt totally comfortable too. It can supposedly hold up to 400 pounds, which is way more than my old Coleman chair that started sagging after just one season.
The side table thing? Honestly, that’s what sold me. I’m forever trying to balance my drink on uneven ground, and this little fold-out table is a lifesaver. Perfect for holding my beer, phone, or the little plate of snacks my wife hands me. When you’re not using it, it just folds right up against the chair – no big deal.
Setting it up couldn’t be easier. You basically just grab the seat and pull it open – takes like 5 seconds. Folding it is a bit trickier the first couple times, but once you get the hang of it (you put your foot on the base and pull these handles), it’s not bad at all.
The chair’s a bit heavier than some others at about 14.5 pounds, but to be fair, it feels way more substantial. The mesh back is nice when it’s hot out – keeps you from getting that gross sweaty back thing happening. And everything dries pretty quickly if it gets wet, which happened to us during an unexpected shower.
Height-wise, it sits a bit higher than my other camping chairs at 20 inches off the ground, which is actually perfect. Makes it way easier to get in and out of, especially after a long hike when your legs are shot.
Only downside? It takes up a bit more space in the car than our regular folding chairs. It’s thin when folded (about 5 inches), but still pretty long at 34.8 inches. Not a dealbreaker though, just something to keep in mind if your car is already packed to the gills.

I’ve been using this chair for everything lately – backyard hangouts, camping, my daughter’s softball games, even brought it to the beach (though carrying it through sand for a quarter mile wasn’t the highlight of my day). The rocking motion is super relaxing – I may have dozed off in it more than once!
The black color hides dirt pretty well, which is good because I’m not exactly careful with my outdoor gear. The frame seems solid with that powder coating – no signs of rust after getting caught in the rain a couple times.

All in all, this chair is a huge upgrade from those $20 folding chairs I used to buy every other summer. Yeah, it’s pricier, but it’s built to last and the comfort level is night and day. My wife actually ordered herself one after stealing mine for an entire evening! The rocking feature is seriously addictive – there’s something so soothing about gently rocking while sitting around the campfire or watching the sunset with a cold one.
