I recently took the plunge and bought this folding stair climbing wheelchair, and honestly, I’m pretty impressed with what it delivers. We needed something reliable for my dad who’s been having mobility issues lately, and this has been a total game-changer for our family.
So the chair is made from aluminum alloy which makes it surprisingly lightweight but still super sturdy. The paint job is actually really nice – doesn’t chip easily and seems like it’ll hold up for the long haul. The PVC seat is more comfortable than I expected, and my dad says it feels secure. What I really like is that headrest – you can adjust it based on how tall the person is, which is a feature I didn’t even know I needed until we had it.
One of the best things about it is how it folds down. We’re talking about 47 x 21 x 12 inches when collapsed, which means it fits in my trunk with room to spare! I was worried about storage since our house isn’t exactly spacious, but it tucks away pretty nicely in the hall closet. The safety belts are pretty reassuring too – they keep my dad stable when we’re navigating those tricky stairs at my sister’s house.
The weight capacity is impressive – 350 pounds! That’s way more than we need, but it’s nice knowing there’s that extra margin of safety. The chair itself only weighs like 29 pounds, which honestly feels lighter than my old vacuum cleaner. I can manage it by myself most of the time, though going down a full flight of stairs definitely takes some strength and careful handling.
The wheel setup is kind of perfect – it’s got these two directional wheels and two steering wheels that make it really maneuverable. I was worried about tight corners in our hallway, but it handles them just fine. And going down stairs? Way easier than I thought it would be! The track system they’ve designed makes the descent pretty smooth.
Cleaning it is a breeze too – just wipe down the PVC with a damp cloth and you’re good to go. This has come in handy more times than I’d like to admit (my dad spills his coffee… a lot).
We’ve used it for hospital visits, getting down our porch steps, and even took it to a baseball game last month. It’s honestly become our go-to mobility solution. The bright yellow and black colors might look a bit “emergency services” style, but that visibility has been helpful in crowded places.
Setting it up is pretty straightforward – no tools needed which is great because I’m definitely not the handy type! The zippers make assembly super quick, which was a lifesaver when we were rushing to an appointment last week.
There is a bit of a learning curve with using it on stairs. You have to keep a safe distance, make sure those safety belts are secure, and use the foot pressure rod correctly. I found that pushing down rather than forward gives me better control. And yeah, you definitely need some arm strength – my first attempt was a bit wobbly, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.
The dimensions are about 19 x 33 x 61 inches when it’s unfolded, which is pretty standard wheelchair size. It came with two safety belts in the package, and I’d definitely recommend using both of them every single time.
To be fair, it’s not perfect – the manual could be clearer on some of the operation steps, and I kind of wish the wheels were a tad bigger for outdoor use. But compared to the clunky hospital chair we were using before? Night and day difference.
