I’ve been using Fabricoat’s black fabric paint for a few months now, and honestly, I’m pretty impressed with what this little bottle can do. I was skeptical at first (aren’t we all about DIY products?), but this stuff actually works!
So my living room chair had these awful faded spots that were driving me crazy, and replacing it wasn’t in the budget. I figured I’d give this fabric paint a shot – what did I have to lose, right?
The best thing about this Fabricoat paint is that it doesn’t make fabric feel like cardboard when it dries. That was my biggest worry! My chair still feels, well, like fabric – kind of soft and definitely flexible. Nothing like when I tried regular paint on a canvas bag years ago and it cracked after like two uses.
Applying it was easier than I expected. I just used an old makeup sponge I had lying around (probably not what the pros would recommend, but it worked fine for me!). The paint spread pretty evenly, though I did need a couple coats on my chair since it was absorbing quite a bit. To be fair, it was this velvet-ish material that basically drinks up anything liquid.
One bottle covered my dining chair with some leftover for touching up my kid’s sneakers that were looking pretty sad. I’d say you get decent coverage – maybe like 10-15 square feet depending on what you’re painting. Not bad at all for the price.
The satin finish looks natural – not too shiny, not too flat. It dried faster than I thought it would, too. I could touch it after about an hour without getting black fingers, but I let it fully cure for two days just to be safe.
I’ve also used it on a denim jacket (gave it this cool distressed black look) and even tried it on some fabric parts of my car interior where my coffee spilled and left a stain. Way cheaper than going to a detailer!
The only thing I wish I’d known before starting is how important it is to clean whatever you’re painting really well. I had to redo a section because I missed some grease or something and the paint didn’t take evenly.
Temperature matters too – I tried painting in my garage in the middle of winter and it definitely didn’t apply as smoothly as when I did projects in my heated house.
For anyone curious about the specs, it’s 8.5 fluid ounces (250ml), has a satin finish, and it’s non-toxic which is great since my cat likes to rub against everything I own. The black color is deep and rich – not that washed-out black you sometimes get with fabric dyes.
It’s been about three months since my chair project, and it still looks good even with daily use. No fading or cracking, which is pretty impressive!
