So I’ve been using this DMI Tub Transfer Bench for about a month now after my mom had her hip replacement, and honestly, it’s been a total game-changer for us.
We were pretty stressed about how she’d manage showers during recovery, but this thing has made life so much easier. It’s got this clever sliding design where you can sit on one end outside the tub and then just kinda scoot yourself over into the shower – no awkward climbing or balancing required. For someone like my mom who’s been super nervous about falling, it’s been a huge relief.
Setting it up was surprisingly not a headache? I’m usually terrible with assembly stuff, but this was actually pretty straightforward – no tools needed, which was nice because I never know where my toolbox is anyway. Took me maybe 15 minutes tops, and the instructions were clear enough that I didn’t have to watch any YouTube tutorials (a win in my book!).
The build quality is better than I expected for the price. It’s aluminum so it doesn’t rust, which is obviously important for something that’s gonna get wet all the time. The seat is this sturdy plastic material, and it comes with this safety belt that my mom absolutely insists on using every time, haha. Oh, and the rubber feet with suction cups are clutch – that thing doesn’t budge once it’s set up.
One feature I really appreciate is how adjustable everything is. We could set the height to work perfectly with our weirdly tall tub (our bathroom is from like the 70s and nothing is standard size). It goes from about 19 inches up to 23.5 inches in these small increments. Plus, you can switch the backrest around depending on which side your tub is on, which was handy since our bathroom layout is kind of awkward.
I was a bit concerned about weight capacity at first since my mom isn’t exactly tiny, but this bench holds up to 400 pounds, which is plenty. And despite being pretty sturdy, it only weighs like 10.7 pounds, so I can move it easily when I need to clean the bathroom thoroughly.
Size-wise, it’s about 39 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 37 inches high. The seat itself is pretty generous – 19 inches wide by 14.5 inches deep. Definitely measure your bathroom before ordering though! We almost had an issue with our narrow doorway but managed to make it work.
To be fair, it’s not the prettiest thing to have in your bathroom – very “medical equipment” looking – but functionality-wise, it’s been pretty amazing. My mom feels so much more confident showering on her own now, which gives me peace of mind too.
Oh, and if you’ve got an FSA account, you can use that to buy this, which is how we got ours. Saved us a chunk of change!
If you’re taking care of someone who’s struggling with mobility or recovering from surgery like we are, I’d definitely recommend giving this a try. It’s made our daily routine way less stressful than I thought it would be.
