I’ve spent the last two months with the Bugaboo Giraffe high chair, and honestly, I’m kind of kicking myself for not getting this sooner for my little one! This wooden high chair is pretty much everything I was looking for – it looks way nicer than those plastic monstrosities that take over your dining area.
First impression? This thing is built to last. It’s made from this really nice European beechwood (apparently it’s FSC-certified, whatever that means, but I guess it’s good for the environment). I went with the black finish because it matches our kitchen table, but they have other colors too. The chair is surprisingly lightweight – just 11 pounds – which is awesome because I’m constantly moving it between the kitchen and dining room depending on where we’re eating.
What’s really impressed me is how this chair actually grows with your kid. I’m not even joking – my husband sat in it the other day (he’s about 190 pounds) and it held him just fine! The specs say it supports up to 220 pounds, which is kind of insane for a high chair. You can adjust the footrest to like 9 different positions and the seat height has 5 options. It takes literally a second to change – just click and you’re done. No tools or anything!
For newborns, you’ll need to get their Newborn Set separately (a bit annoying they don’t include it, to be fair). My sister has a 4-month-old and borrowed our chair with that attachment, and her baby looked super comfy in it. We’re using it with the regular seat since my daughter is 18 months now.
The cleaning situation is SO much better than our old high chair. My daughter is the messiest eater on the planet, and I can just wipe this thing down with a damp cloth. No fabric to wash, no weird crevices where food gets stuck forever. We did end up buying the tray separately, which is totally worth it because you can throw it in the dishwasher.
Size-wise, it’s about 23 x 21 x 33 inches, which isn’t small but doesn’t dominate the room like some baby gear tends to do. And I love that it doesn’t scream “BABY ITEM” – it actually looks like a nice piece of furniture. My daughter uses it for arts and crafts time too, not just for eating.
One thing that’s been a nice surprise is how stable it is. My daughter is at that stage where she’s constantly wiggling and trying to climb out of everything, but this chair has a wide enough base that I don’t worry about it tipping over.
I did hesitate at the price point initially – it’s definitely more expensive than some options out there. But considering we’ll use it for years (possibly even when she’s a teenager, which is wild to think about), it’s been worth every penny so far.
