I’ve been testing out the Air Hawk electric wheelchair for about three months now, and honestly, I’m pretty impressed with it. At just 41 pounds, this thing is seriously lightweight! The aluminum frame feels really sturdy though – I was kind of skeptical at first, but it easily handles my brother-in-law who’s around 260 pounds, just under the 264-pound weight limit.
The folding feature is a game-changer for us. It literally takes like 3 seconds to fold up, no joke. We’ve been storing it in the trunk of my Camry with plenty of room to spare since it folds down to this compact 31.5″ x 17.7″ x 30.7″ package. Way easier than the clunky wheelchair we had before.
Travel has been so much less stressful with this chair. We flew to Florida last month, and I was worried about airline issues, but it turns out it’s fully FAA-approved. The TSA folks didn’t give us any trouble with the removable batteries either. To be fair, I was still a bit nervous going through security, but everything went smoothly.
The battery life is pretty good too! It comes with two 6Ah batteries, and each one gives you about 13 miles of range. We’ve never actually drained both in a single day, even when we went to Disney and were out from morning till night. They take maybe 5 hours to recharge, which isn’t bad at all. The 4 mph top speed doesn’t sound impressive on paper, but it’s actually perfect for navigating through crowds or indoor spaces.
The warranty gave me some peace of mind – 2 years is better than what came with my last chair, which only had 1 year of coverage. I haven’t had to use the customer support yet, so fingers crossed it stays that way!
Comfort-wise, it’s not bad at all. The 18.5-inch seat is roomy enough, and you can adjust the armrests up or down depending on what feels better. The mesh seat cushion is a nice touch – it’s breathable and easy to clean, which matters when you’re using it daily. My only complaint is that on longer outings, like 4+ hours, you might want an extra cushion for added comfort, but that’s pretty normal with any wheelchair.
It handles different surfaces surprisingly well for its size. We’ve taken it over gravel paths at the park and even some slightly bumpy grass areas without any issues. The solid tires mean no flats to worry about, which is such a relief. It can manage inclines up to 10 degrees, which covers most ramps and slopes we’ve encountered.
The turning radius is tight enough for our home hallways, and the 3.1-inch ground clearance has been enough to clear most thresholds. I really appreciate the electromagnetic brakes – they stop on a dime when needed.
If you’re looking for something portable that doesn’t feel like a compromise, this Air Hawk has been pretty great for us. It’s definitely more maneuverable than my previous chair and feels more premium than its price would suggest. Perfect for travel or everyday use if you need something that won’t take up your entire trunk or apartment.
