I’ve been looking for a decent wheelchair ramp for months now, and honestly, I think I finally found “the one” with this 3FT portable aluminum ramp. So I’ve had it for about three weeks, and I’m pretty impressed with how it handles those tricky steps around my house—works great for anything between 3-9 inches high. The slope is actually reasonable (something like 1:6 to 1:10 depending on your step), which means my dad doesn’t feel like he’s mountain climbing every time he visits!
The thing is surprisingly sturdy for how light it is. It’s rated for 600 pounds, which is more than enough for my dad’s electric wheelchair. Those little transition plates (about 4 inches long) on both ends are a nice touch—they keep the whole setup from wobbling around when he’s going up or down. I’ve left it outside during a couple of rainstorms, and it still looks good as new. No rust or anything, which is way better than that cheap steel one we had before.
The non-slip surface is actually legit, not just marketing talk. My dad rolled over it yesterday after it rained, and there was zero slipping. Those 2-inch guardrails on the sides give me peace of mind too—kind of like bowling bumpers but, you know, for wheelchairs! There are some reflective stickers on it too, which is pretty handy when it gets dark early.
What I really love though? The weight. At just 16 pounds, I can actually move this thing around by myself (my back thanks you!). It folds up pretty compact too—about 36″L x 14″W x 2.75″H, which means it fits in my trunk easily when we go to visit my sister. When it’s unfolded, it’s nice and wide at 29 inches, so there’s plenty of room for the wheelchair.
We’ve been using it all over the place—the front step, the sliding door threshold that always gave us trouble, and even to get into my sister’s SUV when we went shopping last weekend. To be fair, we haven’t permanently installed it anywhere yet, but it comes with screws if you want to. It stays put pretty well on its own though.
Cleaning it is a breeze—just hosed it down once when my nephew dropped ice cream on it (don’t ask). For the specs people, it’s made of aluminum, holds 600 lbs, measures 36″L x 29″W x 2″H when open, weighs 16 lbs, and handles steps from 3-9 inches. Oh, and it meets those ADA guidelines, which is reassuring.
Look, it’s not the cheapest ramp out there, but it’s kind of perfect for us—Dad can be more independent, and I don’t throw my back out trying to maneuver his chair over steps anymore. Definitely one of the better purchases I’ve made this year!
