I honestly never thought I’d be excited about a folding chair, but this Hercules Banquet Chair has kind of blown me away. I picked up a set of these for our community center events last month, and they’ve been pretty solid so far.
The first thing I noticed was how sturdy these things feel. They’re made with this heavy-duty steel frame (16-gauge if you’re into the specifics), which explains why they can handle up to 300 pounds. My uncle Pete, who’s a bigger guy, sat in one for our whole family reunion dinner without any issues – that was definitely a relief!
The black vinyl covering is actually not bad at all – it has a somewhat professional look that works for both casual get-togethers and more formal stuff. What I really appreciate is how easy they are to clean. After my nephew spilled punch all over one chair, I just wiped it down with a damp cloth and you couldn’t even tell anything happened. That’s a huge plus when you’re dealing with the chaos of hosting events.
Comfort-wise, they’re definitely better than those horrible plastic chairs we used to have. There’s about 2 inches of foam padding, which isn’t exactly like sitting on a cloud, but it’s comfier than my old dining chairs for sure. The back has this crown design that supports your lower back reasonably well – I sat through a three-hour meeting last week without the usual backache, so that’s saying something!
One thing I was worried about was storage, since our supply closet is already packed. These fold up super thin (like 2.5 inches when collapsed), and at 12 pounds, they’re light enough that I can move a stack of them without throwing out my back. They’re about 38 inches tall, 18.5 inches wide when folded or open, and extend to 20 inches deep when you set them up.
The chair height is around 18 inches, which seems to work fine for most people. My mother-in-law, who has knee problems, mentioned they were easy enough for her to get in and out of. Oh, and they have these little floor glides on the bottom that don’t scratch up our hardwood floors – a detail I didn’t expect but totally appreciate.
To be fair, they’re not exactly the statement piece of furniture that’ll transform your space, but they get the job done and look decent doing it. For commercial-grade chairs that came fully assembled (thank goodness), I’d say they’re a pretty solid investment if you’re hosting events or need extra seating.
