I’ve been testing out the Feather Mobility wheelchair for a couple of months now, and honestly, it’s been a game-changer for our family outings. The first thing that struck me was how incredibly light this thing is – just 13.5 pounds without the wheels and 19 pounds fully assembled! That’s pretty much unheard of in the wheelchair world. I was kind of skeptical at first, but it really does seem to be the lightest wheelchair I’ve come across.
The red cushion is actually nicer than it looks in the pictures – adds a bit of personality compared to the boring black ones you usually see. When folded up, it’s super compact (about 25″W x 14″L x 29″H), which means I can easily toss it in the trunk of my Civic without any hassle. It’s way easier to manage than my mom’s old bulky wheelchair that we used to struggle with.
As for durability, I was worried that “lightweight” might mean “flimsy,” but the aluminum frame is surprisingly sturdy. It’s held up really well so far and supports my dad who’s around 230 lbs, well under the 250 lb capacity. The cushion is pretty comfortable too – he hasn’t complained about soreness even after a full day at the zoo last weekend. The 18″ seat width works well for him, though if you’re on the larger side, you might want to double-check those dimensions.
Setting it up is a breeze – takes less than a minute to unfold and attach the wheels. No tools needed! It’s about 25″W x 30″L x 35″H when open, which means it fits through doorways without any problems. We’ve taken it through some pretty tight spots at restaurants and it navigates surprisingly well. The anti-tippers are a feature I didn’t think we’d need, but they’ve actually come in handy a few times on uneven sidewalks – definitely adds some peace of mind.
The braking system is better than I expected. The front wheel locks are easy to reach from a seated position, which gives my dad more independence. As the person usually pushing, I appreciate the brake levers on the handles – they’re similar to bicycle brakes and lock securely. The quick-release wheels are probably my favorite feature though – makes it so much easier to fit in smaller car trunks when needed.
To be fair, it’s not perfect – I wish the storage pocket in the back was a bit larger, but it’s good enough for a water bottle and some small essentials. The armrests could use a bit more padding for all-day comfort, but that’s not a deal-breaker.
After using wheelchairs from various facilities and rentals over the years, the quality difference is noticeable. The aluminum doesn’t show signs of wear like some of the cheaper models we’ve tried, and the nylon upholstery cleans up easily (which came in handy after an ice cream incident). Everything just feels more thought-out and well-made.
It’s made such a difference in our ability to get out and do things together. Last month we even managed a full day at the farmers market – something that would have been exhausting with a heavier chair. For anyone looking for a portable wheelchair that doesn’t sacrifice quality, this one’s definitely worth considering.
