I’ve Got to Tell You About This Shower Transfer Bench That Changed My Mom’s Life
So I finally bit the bullet and bought this adjustable backrest transfer bench for my mom after her hip surgery, and honestly? It’s been a total game-changer for our family. I spent forever researching these things (way too many late nights scrolling through reviews!), and I’m pretty glad I settled on this one.
First off, this thing is super versatile. What I love is that you can flip the arm handle and backrest to either side depending on your bathroom setup. That was huge for us since mom’s bathtub has that awkward layout. The height adjusts in like 10 different positions too – somewhere between 32 to 36 inches if you’re curious. My mom’s on the shorter side, so we actually needed to adjust it down quite a bit, but my uncle who’s over 6 feet used it when he visited and we just popped it up higher. No tools needed or anything!
The stability is no joke. Those big suction cups on the bottom? They grip like crazy even when the floor gets all wet and slippery. That was my biggest worry honestly – the last thing I needed was mom taking another fall. The frame is this aluminum alloy stuff that doesn’t rust (thank goodness because our bathroom gets SO humid), and it holds up to 330 pounds which is pretty impressive for something that only weighs about 10 pounds itself. It’s actually lighter than my old vacuum cleaner, which makes it easy for me to move around when I’m cleaning the bathroom.
The seat itself is way comfier than I expected. It’s this blown plastic material that’s kind of contoured, not like those flat hard plastic seats that dig into your legs. It’s pretty roomy too – about 32 inches long and 26 inches wide. My mom says it feels secure, not like she’s going to slide off or anything. Oh, and it has these drainage holes all over so water doesn’t pool up – that was a problem with her old shower chair for sure.
Putting it together was actually not bad at all. I mean, I’m terrible with assembly stuff (just ask my husband about the bookshelf incident of 2021), but I managed this on my own in maybe 15 minutes? No tools needed, which was a huge plus.
To be fair, it’s not the prettiest thing in the world – just basic gray – but it looks better than those institutional-looking medical chairs, and honestly, function over fashion when it comes to bathroom safety, right?
The only minor issue we had was figuring out which way to position it at first, but once we played around with it a bit, it fit our tub perfectly. My mom says it’s totally changed her shower experience – she used to be so anxious about bathing after her surgery, but now she’s back to her daily routine without needing my help every time.
If you’ve got an older parent or anyone with mobility issues, this is definitely worth checking out. It’s kind of pricey compared to some basic shower chairs, but for the peace of mind alone? Totally worth every penny.
